“Political language is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind. ”
― George Orwell
I wasn't shocked when I read Obama's kill list on NYT. All presidents lie, and it's just a matter of how well they package themselves. Everyday, the government shreds our constitutional rights, taps our mobile, kills innocents abroad, and keeps these different avenues in secrecy when the people demand greater transparency.Once the president claims some sort of power, even if there are objections and their decisions don't seem to be constitutional, it becomes impossible to get the power back.
This article basically says that the executive branch claim to have the right to kill their "enemies" at any time, and Obama spends every Tuesday to review how far counterterrorism operations will go and approves new names on an expanding "kill list." How chilling is it to learn that President Obama– who campaigned against the Iraq war and torture– simultaneously justifies the use of drones to do his killing because they are "surgical" and those killings are consistent with our values? What is he talking about?
One thing we have to keep in mind is that no matter who we voted for, we must remain vigilant and realize that nobody ever seizes power with the intention of giving it up.
The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power. Don't let patriotism blind you. Don't let political language make you forget that some other sets of people are human too.

1Q84

我終於被banker(+悶到要死的media law)逼到絕路,就dedicate篇文比你啦。

Top 5 food cravings
I don't know why, but these days I feel like my hunger is never ending and I always want something to nibble on (despite the fact that I'm full).
Crap.
Anyway, I've been surfing food blogs while studying (hence the lack of productivity and concentration), and here're my top five food cravings at the moment:
2) Ms. B's Cakery
4) La Creperie
5) Holly Brown

D:
Roommate
WTF!

On love
One of the most important books that I've read is Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides, which is a deeply moving story of a Greek family’s encounter with twentieth century America. It traces a rampant gene through three generations of the Greek/American Stephanides family, which causes narrator Calliope Stephanides at the age of forty-one to be re-born as a boy (Cal) when he has previously been raised as a girl (Calliope/Callie). Calliope suffers from 5-alpha-reductase deficiency syndrome, where both male and female genitalia are present in a body, one more visible than the other.
What is significant in this novel is that Eugenides shatters the “American Dream” and reprimands its acclaim of being “liberal”. Although the states tried to uphold certain democratic values, American culture by large is repelled when they hear words like "hermaphrodites," "gay" and "lesbian."
Last week, North Carolina passed Amendment One, which defined marriage solely as a union between a man and a woman. It really angers me that people are trying to be involved in personal affairs, like who you can love or marry. It's ridiculous that the society is attaching a criminal aspect when two individuals of the same sex happen to fall in love. Maybe you could alleviate those who already feel displaced in their biological gender instead of confining their ability to gain respect?
There's an ancient myth of metamorphosis about the Navajo society, which included a category of person called "berdache." It is basically someone who adopts a gender other than their biological one. Sex is biological. Gender is cultural. The Navajo understand this. If a person wants to switch her gender, they let her. And they don’t denigrate that person - they honor her.
Love is love. Approving same-sex marriage is not a moral decline of our country– passing the ban is.

some cute things i found from Sugarland's pin interest:
FYI– Sugarland is a cupcake & gelato shop on Franklin Street, right next to UNC campus! They have a good selection of cupcake flavors and I've always had some trouble picking which one I wanted.

Under the Carolina Blue Sky...
A guy proposed to his gf during the commencement yesterday, uber sweet!
Notable:
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg was one of the speakers during commencement yesterday, and has told University of North Carolina graduates that the more we learn, the freer we will be. "Knowledge is the most powerful weapon in the fight against repression," he said. Every generation has brought more freedom to this country, and he expects the latest generation to continue the effort, especially after last Tuesday's vote approving a state constitutional amendment banning gay marriage in North Carolina.
Quotable:
"The business world is dog eat dog, and the government world is the opposite."
I guess this is one of the most remarkable part of his speech– that occasionally, it is necessary to elbow each other. And Bloomberg successfully delivered these hard facts and advice without losing humor.

"Reporters travel with the candidates and see the campaign as it is waged
on the road. They always interpret the outcome as a matter of skill and strategy. The winning side has it; the losers don’t. This is so automatic, it
is as if it were a fixed law of journalism.
Losers are always portrayed as inept, people who don’t know how to campaign effectively, following dumb strategies, always. Even Al Gore who won
the 2000 popular vote—and by a margin three times larger than Kennedy’s
1960 victory—was portrayed as an inept campaigner who didn’t know how
to run a campaign."– Professor Stimson
If just once winners were portrayed as inept or losers as astute, these stories might have some meaning. But it never happens.

You know you have a great friend when they deliver fresh scones to your door :) Esp when you still have one more exam to kill!
